From there it was by train through the heart of Russia. The Russian countryside was beautiful, but after a few days not all that inspiring. That changed when our little traveller arrived in the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator. The Wombat was delighted with the warm welcome of the local population, especially on the little expedition through the vast and spectacular plains around Ulan Bator. It was also very nice to stretch its little legs after all those days on the train.
Then, after a minor hold up at the Chinese/Mongolian border, on to the last stop: Beijing. An overwhelming experience, The Wombat thought. The Forbidden City, the Temple of Heaven, the Tiananmen Square with Mao's Tomb. And of course a visit to the Great Wall!Crossing half the Asian continent: an exhausting but a trip worthwhile!
